Invitation: Be part of a Social Learning Video

slv invitation

Be part of a Social Learning Video!

Do you have experiences, ideas, or questions about how we can adapt to climate change in a fair and just way? We are looking for people from different backgrounds and perspectives to take part in the Social Learning Video (SLV) process in the JustREACH pilot regions.

Together, we want to explore what just climate adaptation means in practice—and learn from each other's experiences along the way.

What are Social Learning Videos?

Social Learning Videos (SLVs) are short films created together with actors from the pilot region. They bring together diverse perspectives, experiences, and forms of knowledge around climate adaptation and justice.

The films may tell the stories of people who are already taking action to adapt to climate change: What are they doing? What has worked well? What challenges have they faced, and what have they learned along the way?

They will also give space to people who are particularly affected by climate change and whose experiences and perspectives are often less visible in formal decision-making processes.

SLVs are about more than just making a film. The process itself creates opportunities to exchange ideas, reflect together, question assumptions, and learn from different perspectives to enable a more just climate adaptation.

What do we want to achieve?

Within the JustREACH project, the SLV process aims to:

  • Find and showcase local knowledge and inspiring examples of climate adaptation

  • Explore what “just climate adaptation” means in different places and for different people

  • Encourage reflection and discussion about:

    • what makes adaptation measures successful and more just

    • how adaptation measures affect different groups

    • how questions of vulnerability, justice, and power are connected to climate adaptation

    • our own assumptions and ways of thinking

  • Bring together different perspectives and forms of knowledge, including local, experiential, and professional knowledge

  • Foster learning and exchange within and across the JustREACH pilot regions

  • Give visibility to little-known adaptation initiatives and voices that are often underrepresented in formal climate adaptation processes

Who are we looking for?

You do not need to be a climate expert to participate. We are interested in bringing together people with different experiences, knowledge, opinions, and relationships to climate adaptation.

For example, you might be:

  • Someone affected by climate change: You may be directly experiencing the impacts of climate change or face particular challenges in adapting to them. Perhaps you have fewer resources, support, or opportunities to respond to these impacts, and your perspective is not always included in formal decision-making processes.

  • Someone already working for change: You may be actively involved in climate adaptation, working on new ideas, implementing solutions, or supporting more just and inclusive approaches. This could include people with the power to initiate or influence change, as well as people working on the ground to make change happen.

  • Someone who is interested but still undecided: You may be interested in climate adaptation but have not yet formed a clear opinion about particular measures or approaches. Perhaps you are still exploring different perspectives and wondering what the best way forward might be.

  • Someone who is sceptical or reluctant to change: You may have concerns about proposed adaptation measures or prefer existing ways of doing things. Your perspective is equally important: meaningful discussion requires space for different views, questions, and concerns.

These categories are only intended as a guide. You do not need to fit neatly into any of them. We are looking for a broad diversity of experiences and perspectives.

We also welcome people from a wide range of sectors and backgrounds, including:

public administration · policy · civil society · community organisations · NGOs · the private sector · academia and research

How can you get involved?

There are different ways to participate in the SLV process. Depending on your interests, time, and availability, you might take on one or more of the following roles:

  • SLV Advisory Group: Help identify relevant climate adaptation examples, suggest people and perspectives that should be included, help us to decide who should see the video and take part in shared discussions and reflections throughout the process.

  • SLV Filming Group: Collaborate in developing and producing the videos. You do not necessarily need previous filmmaking experience—your ideas, local knowledge, and perspective are what matter.

  • SLV Protagonists: Share your experiences with a particular climate adaptation practice or initiative and help bring your story and perspective into the film.

  • SLV Discussion Group: Watch the completed films and take part in discussions about the questions, experiences, and perspectives they raise.

You can participate in the way that feels right for you. The different roles may also overlap.

What does the SLV process look like?

The SLV process is flexible and shaped together with its participants. We will adapt it to local contexts as well as participants' needs, interests, and availability.

A typical process may include:

  1. Getting together, reflecting and choosing stories to tell: Bringing together people with different perspectives, sharing experiences and discussing questions around climate adaptation, identifying inspiring, challenging or little-known adaptation examples and the people involved in them.

  2. Creating films together: developing ideas, filming and discussing how the stories and perspectives should be represented.

  3. Watching and discussing: Sharing the completed films and using them as a starting point for further discussion and reflection.

  4. Looking back: Reflecting together on the process, what we have learned, and what we might take forward.

What could an SLV look like?

Every Social Learning Video will be different because every place, story, and group of participants is different.

Interested?

Would you like to take part in the SLV process in your region? Or would you simply like to learn more before deciding?

We would be very happy to hear from you!
